Grants. Dr Belinda Wheaton and I have just secured £4,317 from the British Academy to develop comparative research on the institutionalisation of parkour. Project entitled: 'The politics of parkour: transnationalism, youth and social policy'.
Presentations. My most recent presentation was 'Sport, jurisgenesis and moral regulation', Political Studies Association annual conference, Edinburgh, 1 April 2010.
A summary of my paper 'The cultural politics of recreational access in North-West Europe' given to the AHRC Sport and Modern Europe network at Pembroke College, Cambridge University in January 2010, can be found here. The site also includes reponses to the symposium.
Conference. The 4th Political Studies Association Sport and Politics group annual conference was held at Leeds Metropolitan University on 26 February 2010. I was co-organiser. Read the conference report.
New Book. I am part of a team from the University of Brighton that have been commissioned by Sage to write an Introduction to Sport Studies: Bodies, Minds and Societies. This book will feature entries on the hero and the politics of the environment drawn from my lectures and research.
PhD success. On 6 July 2009 I was awarded a doctorate for my thesis 'The cultural politics of heroism in British mountaineering, 1921-1995'. This was supervised by Prof Alan Tomlinson and Prof Lincoln Allison and examined by Prof Jeffrey Hill and Prof Garry Whannel.
